An alumnus of Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, with a BS in civil engineering, Charles Scharf owns and serves as the president of Erosion Specialists, Inc., in Barrington, IL. Having worked in his field for approximately 35 years, Charles Scharf of Barrington, IL, maintains active membership with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

ASCE provides resources and training to members seeking continuing education credits in various areas. A number of programs and educational opportunities are available, including study programs for board certifications in areas such as geotechnical engineering.

The ASCE certification program in geotechnical engineering walks participants through the steps involved in becoming a geotechnical engineer, from the basics and examination process to board certification requirements. Board certification attests to potential employers that the geotechnical engineer has special skills and knowledge needed for the industry. Among the field’s highest distinctions, board certifications are often a criterion that employers expect would-be employees to have satisfied.
